Employment Opportunities
Sterling College offers a relaxed environment with supportive staff and
dedicated students. Benefits include TIAA-Cref retirement plan, health
insurance, and salary commensurate with experience.
There is currently one job opening at the College:
Publications Editor and Director of Media Relations
Sterling College seeks a writer, editor, journalist, or public relations specialist to edit, write, and coordinate content for the Colleges publications and website. The Director also writes press releases, pursues reporter’s queries, and actively seeks local, regional, and national media exposure for the College and its programs.
The Director works closely with the web and print designer, the development and admissions offices, the office of the dean of academics, and reports to the president.
The ideal candidate is a quick, careful, and versatile writer and editor who understands institutional advocacy and marketing, is knowledgeable regarding what reporters and journalists need and want, is creative, and works well with others.
Sterling College is located in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, and with 100 students is one of the nation’s smallest liberal arts colleges. Sterling’s curriculum concentrates on four areas: conservation ecology, sustainable agriculture, circumpolar studies, and outdoor education and leadership.
Sterling’s website – www.sterlingcollege.edu – contains volumes of information relevant to the position of Publications Editor and Director of Media Relations; its recommended applicants explore the site thoroughly.
College publications include the biannual Common Voice magazine, a variety of admissions publications including a viewbook and search pieces, and numerous marketing post cards, posters, web blasts, invitations and announcements. The Director serves as the chief writer and editor, and advises a committee on story selection, editorial approach, and policy.
By writing press releases and conceiving news-worthy stories based on the College’s curriculum, educational philosophy, and unusual mix of experiential and traditional academics, the Director seeks to raise the institutional profile of the College. Responding to reporters, communicating with newspaper and magazine editors, and seeking non-traditional marketing venues, the Director is expected to build relationships with regional and national reporters and writers around likely stories that reflect the qualities and history of the College.
As an editor, the Director may be called upon to lend his or her expertise to grant applications, speeches, and position papers.
Salary: $35,000 – $38,000, benefits, etc.
Please submit a cover letter, resume, and writing samples to Micki Martin, assistant to the president, at mmartin@sterlingcollege.edu. Electronic applications only please.
