It takes some courage to share with the world what I have endured to make it to this beautiful place. I surely can’t explain my adventure in a couple sentences, and I don’t intend to write a novel here. Hopefully, post by post, those who care will understand where and what I came from, why I’m here, and what I intend to do. My love for the Earth and its inhabitants is endless. I’ve been drawn to the Sterling College community since I was a sophomore in high school.

Where I grew up, the bustling city streets tend to harden those who walk them. Those who truly have ambitions to succeed tend to be those who make it out of the muck. I can count on my fingers how many friends I’ve lost to senseless inner city violence, gangs, and drug abuse. For a while, waking up in a dimly lit apartment on a bad side of town was my life. I had hoped sometimes I would just melt away into it all like everyone else, but something kept me going. The fight to get here has been scary, emotionally taxing, and overall hard.

SterlingMy love for plants and sustainable living has always run deep within my blood. From a young age, my Grandmother would take me out to the small garden our building had beside it. It’s the little things like this that shaped who I am today, and why I am here. I never in a million years imagined I could make it to college.

I am here, now, twenty years old, happy and striving towards being the best young man I can be. Three months ago I didn’t have a GED, but I had a dream. I thought long and hard about what I really wanted out of this life. There was no way I would let the city consume me. Just another name on a tombstone, another lost soldier, another wasted young mind. I got down and dirty relearning everything I had previously studied in high school. What a wild ride!

The ride is yet to be over. Will you come with?
