This course is designed to support students in writing a complete first-draft of a novel by the end of the semester.
Structured to coincide with and participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in November, this course will prepare students with tools and structure to help with planning and with short writing and reading assignments before November begins. We will spend the majority of our time looking at aspects of the novel as a form — from setting to character development to plot and theme.
Students should expect to write. A lot. Both in and outside of class. We will aim for a minimum of 50,000 words each by the end of the semester. This means, also, that a significant theme of the class will be how to best support one another through the process of writing your own novel.
