This course considers the evolution of economic systems and the theories that attempt to explain or guide them, economic tools and concepts used by resource professionals, and analysis of current public policies from an economic perspective. We focus particularly on how economics can help us understand the challenges and potential of transitioning to a sustainable social system.
The objectives of this class are to increase understanding of:
- the origins of economic systems and theories and their effects on people and the environment;
- some of the tools used by environmental/resource/ecological economists to understand and modify the environmental impacts of economic activity;
- current economic events and policies, with an emphasis on natural resources;
- quantitative analysis as applied to economic issues.
