Enrollment Requirements and Options:
Students in this pod may enroll in online coursework.
This pod includes the following courses:
Soil, Plants, Microbes I 3 cr
This course gives students an introduction to the biology and chemistry needed to understand how complex interactions between soil, plants and microbes build the foundation for terrestrial life. The classes focuses primarily on the evolutionary connection between plants and microbes through their diversity in metabolism, the structure and function of cells and tissue, and the transmission of genetic information. The topics are taught through the lense of the soil habitat interactions with a focus on photosynthesis, water and nutrient uptake and symbiotic relationships such as bacterial nitrogen fixation and mycorrhizal relationships. The lab component emphasizes the use of the scientific method, experimental design, reading and writing of scientific literature, lab safety and use of basic scientific equipment.
Nordic Skiing 2 cr
An introduction to recreational Nordic Skiing including both classic and skate skiing for groomed trails. Ski waxing, equipment and proper clothing will be addressed as well as technical skiing skills. This course will include on snow instruction with video tape feedback focusing on body position and biomechanics. We will explore local trails including the Craftsbury Outdoor Center network, a long tour from the Highland Lodge, and a day of backcountry skiing on the Catamount trail. Ski specific core training and skiing outside of class to practice skills and build strength are an integral part of the course. As part of our immersion into the ski culture we will read stories and follow World CUp racing as well as journal our own growth and reflections skiing. Instructional video viewing and race videos will aid in understanding technique.
