A College for All Learners

Whether your intelligence is more traditionally academic or you excel in an experiential setting,we welcome you to study and learn at Sterling.

To best serve all students, Sterling Faculty pursue ongoing professional development to understand and address teaching biases as we strive for universal academic design. In defining and refining our approach, Sterling faculty have cultivated a creative, flexible, non-binary approach to helping students get the most from their education. It’s unusual and an approach we’re extremely proud of.

As a working college, Sterling allows students to develop hands-on skills across various disciplines, making the college a match for non-traditional learners and students motivated to pursue a particular passion. And when a student’s needs are specific, Sterling has the staff in place to create a tailored plan.

“At Sterling, we believe that the way you learn is perfect, and we know that many education systems don’t fit every student’s individual boxes,” said Craig Wilson, Sterling’s Director of Learning Support.

Building Off Strengths

Sterling meets students where you are and provides programming and support on an individual basis to help you achieve success. Key to Sterling’s educational philosophy is accommodating all student’s strengths. Whether you have a diagnosed learning difference or special need, Sterling strives to establish a plan that supports you while respecting other learners. Wilson works with students to build accommodation plans as needed, revisiting an IUP you may arrive with and adapting it to meet your current needs with your input.

For students with alternate intelligence, common accommodations could include arranging for text-to-audio, establishing flexible timing for tests and assignments, and allowing for assignment submission in non-written form. The Learning Support team works with you to design a plan based on your needs, serving as a bridge between you and your professors. Once complete, you, your professors, your advisor, and the registrar all sign off on the plan. Then, it’s time to engage with your professors and your support team to activate your plan. Plans are adapted and revised each semester as you complete classes and enroll in new classes with specific requirements.
