President

Greetings and welcome to Sterling College, America’s most unique environmentally focused liberal arts college. Whether you are a prospective student or a parent, a member of our alumni community, or our neighbor here in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, I invite you to explore this website and learn more about Sterling today.

Sterling College is 100% environmentally focused. Our single defining purpose is to prepare people to serve and lead in the climate-driven reordering of systems governing life on Earth. We do this by providing a deep understanding and respect of, and for the natural world, examining the human experience as part of nature instead of separate from it, and by building greater capacity for community and hope. We do this by carefully weaving work, learning, and community into all of our activities.

The Power of Place

Our legacy at Sterling College traces back to 1958, yet the ethos of this land starts much earlier with the Missisquoi Abenaki, the indigenous people of the region known as bitawbogok. Their exemplary sustainable practices set a precedent for the respect and gratitude we hold for the Northeast Kingdom and its rich ecosystems. Modern-day Vermont, our home, has long been a beacon of environmental consciousness, with environmental leaders like George Perkins Marsh, Gaylord Nelson, Madeleine Kunin, Bill McKibben, Annie Leonard, Deborah Moore, and John Dewey leading the charge from this powerful little state.

Our Distinction

Sterling stands as a testament to ecological thinking and action. As a vanguard in environmental liberal arts education, we pride ourselves on our unwavering commitment to sustainability and global well-being. Our accolades speak for themselves - from our groundbreaking decision to divest from fossil fuels to our recognition by Sierra Magazine and our STARS Gold Rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Among Sterling’s many distinguishing features, three warrant a close examination:

  • Experiential Learning: Our curriculum transcends classroom boundaries, incorporating extensive field experiences on our farm, garden, forests, and studios, and through collaborations with regional environmental and community organizations. This synergy equips our students with a holistic educational experience spanning Vermont and beyond. Small classes in the world’s largest classrooms!

  • Student-Centric Approach: Our devotion to student success is unparalleled. Comprehensive advising and support systems underscore our ethos, ensuring timely graduation and a foundation for future career success. Our one foot in the classroom and the other in the field approach ensure rich social networks that will advance your experiences far beyond your time on campus.

  • Vermont Distinction: Nestled in the Northeastern region of Vermont, Sterling offers an education enriched by the state's diverse geography, progressive public policy, commitment to refugee resettlement, and role as an international border state. With Vermont’s state capitol, Montpelier, a short drive away, our students have firsthand insight into legislative activities, linking classroom theory to real-time policy implications.

Sterling's essence is intertwined with the principles of democracy, education, and civil society in Vermont. This amalgamation yields the unique Vermont Distinction that differentiates Sterling from its counterparts nationwide - an educational and learning experience that is singular nationally.

Your journey at Sterling promises to be transformative, not just academically but in equipping you to lead and serve communities while championing the environment. As you explore our campus and offerings, remember: Sterling isn't just a place – it's a commitment to a brighter, sustainable future for our planet.

Welcome to Sterling. We hope you join us in this movement.
